Nigerian wins McDan open
Nigeria's top seed, Michael Moses, was last Saturday crowned the new
champion for the McDan West Africa Tennis Open staged at the Accra Stadium
tennis courts.
He defeated Ghanaian Wisdom
Na-Adjirago 7-5,6-5 in a thrilling encounter.
Despite the toughness of the
opposition I managed to win. I will now go back to Nigeria to prepare for
the Davis Cup,” an elated Moses told the Daily Graphic in a post-match
interview.
Moses took home a cash prize of
$1,000, a trophy, two rackets, a pair of shoes and other products from the
sponsors.
Sarah Adekope completed Nigeria’s dominance in the week-long competition
after defeating Ghana's Kate Coleman
6-1, 6-0 in the ladies final.
Sarah received $500, a trophy, two rackets and products from the
sponsors.
There were also cash prizes and products for players who reached the
second round and semi-finals in both male and female events.
Na-Adjrago, a gold medallist at the 2015 All Africa Games in
Brazzaville, received $600 cash prize, a
silver trophy, two rackets and products from sponsors as runner-up in the
men’s category, while Kate Coleman took
home $200 as cash prize, a racket and products from the sponsors.
In a speech after the men’s final, Mr Daniel McKorley, CEO of McDan Group
of Companies, headline sponsor of the tournament, said the competition was extended to West
Africa to give it an international dimension aimed at developing local talents.
The McDan West Africa Tennis Open Championship is an annual competition
organised by the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF).
