Nigeria wins 2016 SAGE World Cup beating students from China, US, Japan, South Africa, Ireland, Philippines and 22 others

The Student Advancement for Global Entrepreneurship team of Government Girls Secondary School, Abaji in the FCT has won the 2016 SAGE World Cup, which held recently in Manila, Philippines.
Chinenye Udeh, Programmes Manager of SAGE Nigeria, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja.
Udeh said the Nigerian team, known as the Amazing Amazons, competed with students from China, US, Japan, South Africa, Ireland, Philippines and 22 other participating countries in the Social Responsibility Business Category.
Udeh told NAN that the Amazing Amazons emerged winner of the World Cup with their business presentation tagged: “The real farmers market.”
It was aimed at providing access to market for rural farmers.
Udeh said: “Nigeria prevailed over China, USA, Japan, South Africa, Ireland, Ukraine, Israel, Philippines and 20 other participating countries to emerge winner in the Socially Responsible Business category at the 2016 SAGE World Cup held in Manila, Philippines form August 11 to 16.
“The Nigerian team also won the Gold medal in Sustainable Development Goal number 12 (To ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns).

 “The teams from China and Israel came second and third respectively.”
Udeh said the team, through the use of information technology, created a website and a mobile application where consumers could buy directly from the rural farmers at fair prices.
Vanessa Edzuwah, the 16-year-old Chief Executive Officer of the Amazing Amazons SAGE team, said the focus of the project was to apply modern technology in agricultural value chain addition.
Edzuwah added that the project would allow farmers sell their produce fast, maximize their earnings, get relevant market links, farming information and trainings.
She said: “This business model has guaranteed steady income for our team through commissions and advertisements on our platform.
“It has increased household income for rural farmers and provided fresh and healthy agro products to consumers.
“Our app can be downloaded at Google play store or transaction can be concluded via our secured website – www.thefarmersmarketng.com.”
Agwu Amogu, the President/CEO SAGE Africa, said he was proud of the Nigerian team for their talent and ability to proffer solution to agriculture at a time when attention was being focused to the sector for income generation.
Amogu said the SAGE programme had helped to identify potentials of the teenagers early enough and support them to develop them.
According to him, the students are being being prepared for the challenges of business, leadership and civic responsiveness.
NAN recalls that SAGE is an international organisation that engages secondary school age children in a hands-on experiential learning process on how to create wealth and serve their communities.
Every year, regional, national and international competitions are held around the world for these students to showcase their efforts on a world stage to the business, civil and academic communities.
NAN also gathered that SAGE Nigeria teams have won the World cup eight times in the last nine years.
